Federal infrastructure funding comes from multiple sources:
Note: The federal gas tax hasn't been raised since 1993 and hasn't kept pace with inflation. The Highway Trust Fund runs annual deficits that are covered by general tax revenue.
Construction, repair, and maintenance of Interstate Highway System and major roads. Formula grants to states for highway safety, bridge replacement, freight corridors, and congestion relief. The U.S. has 4.2 million miles of roads, including 48,000 miles of Interstate highways.
Repair and replacement of structurally deficient bridges. Over 42,000 bridges across the country are in poor condition. The IIJA includes $40 billion specifically for bridge repair, replacement, and rehabilitation over five years - the single largest dedicated bridge investment since construction of the Interstate Highway System.
Buses, subways, light rail, commuter rail, and paratransit services. Federal funding helps cities purchase new vehicles, upgrade rail systems, improve accessibility, and maintain existing infrastructure. Serves 10+ billion passenger trips annually in U.S. public transit systems.
Amtrak receives federal subsidies for passenger rail service across 46 states. IIJA provides $66 billion for rail over five years - the largest investment in passenger rail since Amtrak's creation in 1971. Funding supports Northeast Corridor upgrades, new equipment, and expansion of service.
Airport improvement grants funded by aviation fuel taxes and passenger facility charges. Supports runway repairs, terminal upgrades, air traffic control modernization, and safety improvements at over 3,300 airports nationwide. IIJA provides $25 billion for airport infrastructure.
Deepening harbors, improving port facilities, and maintaining inland waterways. U.S. ports handle over $1.6 trillion in cargo annually. The Army Corps of Engineers maintains 12,000 miles of inland waterways and 926 harbors. IIJA provides $17 billion for port and waterway improvements.
Expanding high-speed internet access to rural and underserved areas. IIJA provides $65 billion for broadband infrastructure - the largest federal investment in high-speed internet ever. An estimated 42 million Americans lack access to broadband, limiting economic opportunity and access to education and healthcare.
Building a national network of 500,000 EV charging stations. IIJA provides $7.5 billion to support EV charging infrastructure along highways and in communities. Aims to accelerate transition to electric vehicles and reduce transportation emissions.
Replacing lead pipes, upgrading drinking water systems, and improving wastewater treatment. IIJA provides $55 billion for water infrastructure, including $15 billion specifically to replace lead service lines and $10 billion to address PFAS contamination.
